To Whom It May Concern,

I have read “Belle” and consider it one of the better, more commercial independent screenplays I have come across in quite some time. Having been in the film business for 25 years and having produced 17 pictures I can honestly say that it is a rare occurrence when you find such a gem. “Belle” combines the elements of a true story with one of the more successful genres in film, that of the serial killer. The fact that she is America’s first female serial killer makes this historically a fascinating story. Edward Bass has done a terrific job in layering the story with nuance, drama, and, of course, all of the requisite scares and tensions one expects from a genre piece.

I believe the project will attract a strong cast and that Edward will perform admirably as a director on the film. Like Edward I am a hands on producer who often find himself an equal participant in the “direction” of a film. Edward has earned the right and experience to segue seamlessly into the director’s chair. I believe he will show great agility in this role.

Finally, I believe “Belle” has a terrific opportunity to make money. It follows the artistically strong and lucrative tradition of movies like, “Silence of The Lambs”. Given the unique role of “Belle” herself as the first female serial killer in America, the film, in my opinion, will draw a significant audience into the theaters. Frankly, I’m surprised Hollywood has not mined this material before but give Ed and his team credit for finding it first.

Sincerely,

Michael Mailer
